Genetic testing is available for Age-Related Macular
Degeneration!
If you have a family member with Macular Degeneration you have a 75% - 80%
chance of developing this devastating disease. It is important to know your
risk so that early treatment, if needed, can begin to prevent vision loss. Inheritance
cannot be predicted but can be determined through genetic testing.
The test, which is performed on a saliva sample, is called Macula Risk®
and is based on the detection of inherited genes. Studies have shown the test
to be 100% accurate in identifying AMD genes and will provide you and your Eye
Centers of Florida doctor with essential information so that a care plan and
close monitoring may begin.

CHANGING 100 LIVES IN 100 MINUTES
Dr. Brown to help change 100 lives in 100 minutes
FORT MYERS, FLA. (April 3, 2008) – In just 100 minutes on April 9, the lives of 100 people in cities
and towns across the country will be changed forever as their failing eyesight goes from murky to new-found crystal clarity at all distances with crystalens ® cataract-lens implants ... free of charge.
Dr. David C. Brown, founder and medical director of Eye Centers of Florida, will be among a select group of ophthalmologists nationwide to participate in this unique program – Changing 100 Lives in 100 Minutes – which not only can dramatically improve patients’ eyesight, but also will mean many of them may never need eyeglasses again.
Bausch & Lomb, which manufactures the innovative crystalens intraocular lens for cataracts, will
donate 100 pairs of these lenses – generally not covered by private insurance or Medicare. Then, from coast to coast, 100 participating ophthalmologists ... including Brown ... will perform crystalens implantation surgeries simultaneously during the next hour and 40 minutes ... at no additional charge.
This national effort will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Eastern daylight time with the implantation of
the 100,000th crystalens. Crystalens is the only intraocular lens that uses eye muscles to focus in much the same way as the eye’s natural lens, and is designed to provide clear vision at all distances ... near, intermediate and far.
The 100,000 crystalens surgery will be performed by Dr. James P. Gills, founder of St. Luke’s
Cataract & Laser Institute in Tarpon Springs, Fla. A diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, fellow of the American College of Surgeons and certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery, Cataract and Refractive Surgeries, Brown has performed more than 100,000 vision-correction procedures in his 35 years of practice.
Brown is an international leader in sutureless cataract surgery with intraocular-lens implantation.
A pioneer in refractive surgery – specializing in LASIK, LTK and clear lensectomy procedures – Brown performed the first implantable contact lens procedure in the U.S. and was the first in the Southeast to implant a crystalens.
Brown is a graduate of the University of Florida and received his medical degree from the University of Florida School of Medicine. He completed his residency and was an NIH fellow in ophthalmology there.
Eye Centers of Florida, founded by Brown in 1972, is the largest multi-specialty practice in southwest Florida with 14 locations in five counties. The main clinic is located at 4101 Evans Ave., Fort Myers.
The crystalens design is based on the human eye and uses the eye muscle to focus on objects at all
distances. It is the only lens to use the eye’s natural focusing ability and is the first and only such lens to receive FDA approval. Few crystalens patients have experienced problems with night vision, halos or glare.“Typically, crystalens lenses are available only as a cataract-surgery elective upgrade to conventional lenses paid for by government programs or private insurance,” says Brown. “The crystalens has been an extraordinary success, and we wanted to help share this wonderful technology.”
Bausch & Lomb is a multi-billion-dollar eye-health company headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., where it was founded in 1853. It employs 13,000 people worldwide and distributes products in more than 100 countries. The company’s primary product categories are contact lenses, lens care, pharmaceuticals, as well as products for cataract, vitreoretinal and refractive surgeries.
