Laser Thermal Keratoplasty (LTK)
Laser eye surgery options include LTK (Laser Thermal Keratoplasty). Many individuals over the age of 40 need to wear glasses or contacts for farsightedness. As these individuals have aged, the tightly packed collagenous fibers in the eye begin to relax, decreasing the cornea's ability to focus.
LTK (Laser Thermal Keratoplasty) is a laser eye surgery procedure used as a method of treating farsightedness and also provides a means of treating presbyopia (age-induced farsightedness). The LTK system gently heats the collagen connective tissue outside the center of the cornea, thereby causing an increase in the thickness of the fibers which change the curvature of the cornea and results in clear vision.
During the LTK procedure, the patient, who is given a series of eyedrops, is seated comfortably upright as if to undergo an eye exam. The physician applies precisely aimed laser energy to as many as 16 spots around the perimeter of the cornea. Total "chair time" typically is less than five minutes, and most patients leave the office with 30 minutes of the procedure. Normal activity can be resumed the following day.
