This recognition, which may take two years to complete, exceeds state licensure and recognizes the ophthalmologist's extensive medical and educational experience.
Certification is granted to a few physicians who meet a series of accredited training requirements, pass two tests - a written qualifying exam and an oral exam, and complete an intensive evaluation process. Once certified, physicians must continue to maintain their commitment to lifelong learning and practice improvement.
