Cape Coral Native Returns to SWFL After Prestigious Bascom Palmer Residency

Sara Toomey, OD, born and raised in Cape Coral, Florida has joined Eye Centers Doctor of Optometry at Eye Centers of Floridaof Florida, the largest and most experienced eye care practice in the region. Dr. Toomey recently completed a prestigious ocular disease residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, ranked the top eye hospital in the United States in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals issue.

“We welcome Dr. Toomey back to the Eye Centers of Florida family. She was an exemplary employee several years ago and is now an accomplished physician,” says David C. Brown, MD, Founder, Medical Director, and President/CEO of Eye Centers of Florida. “Increasing our medical team to 18 providers allows us to better serve the comprehensive eye health needs of rapidly growing Southwest Florida”.

Dr. Toomey completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville and then attended Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in vision science and a doctorate in optometry.

Dr. Toomey received valuable clinical training through internships at Malcolm Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center Optometry Clinic in Gainesville, Florida, and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. She also completed rotations in pediatrics and specialty contact lenses as a student doctor at the Eye Care Institute at Nova Southeastern University.

During her time at Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Toomey honed her leadership skills and excelled academically. She served as president of the Optometric Student Association for Ocular Disease and was involved in the Florida Optometric Student Association and Pan Student Government Association. Her consistent dedication to academics allowed for her induction to the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society and Dean’s List. She was awarded the Jack Wolfe Outstanding Clinical Performance Scholarship, Chancellor’s Scholarship, Student Development Award and several grants to further her community outreach efforts.

Dr. Toomey has published and presented research at several national industry meetings and given numerous lectures on eye health. She maintains memberships in Southwest Florida Optometric Association, Florida Optometric Association, and American Optometric Association.  She enjoys participating in community vision screenings and promoting diabetes awareness.
